 With Love of Our Country

November is an eventful (or event full) month. We start with the Feast of All Saints on November 1st, a  day set by the Church to celebrate and honor all saints known and unknown. November 2nd, we  celebrate All Souls Day or the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. Why the two days? As hard  as it is to believe, we are not all saints.

November 11th is Veterans Day, a federal holiday set aside to honor and thank ALL veterans. The day  was originally called Armistice Day to celebrate the cease fire between the allies and Germany – the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month in 1918. The day became an official holiday in 1938 as a day  dedicated to world peace, and to honor the veterans of the “war to end all wars.” After World War II, in  1954, President Eisenhower signed legislation changing the name to Veterans Day. Fly your flag on the  11th. If you have the day off, attend a ceremony in your area. If you don’t have the day off, please take  the time to remember all veterans and active duty members of our armed services.

November 23rd is Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving has been celebrated in North America since the  beginning of colonial times. In 1621 the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn  harvest feast that is generally acknowledged as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies.  For the next two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. While

Loading up food for Veterans at True North Church 10/

10/2023

Plymouth may have celebrated the first non-religious thanksgiving, other colonies celebrated  thanksgiving before the Plymouth colony. The Jamestown, Virginia colony celebrated their first  thanksgiving in 1619. The Spanish colony in San Elizario, Texas celebrated their first thanksgiving in  1598, and the Saint Augustine colony in Florida celebrated thanksgiving in 1565. Perhaps we should give  Catholics of St. Augustine credit for the Thanksgiving tradition. Thanksgiving became a federal holiday in  1863 when President Abraham Lincoln signed legislation declaring the last Thursday in November as  Thanksgiving Day. Legislation in 1941 changed the day to the fourth Thursday in November.

I thank the Faithful Navigators and members of the Color Corps who helped make the exemplification of  the Fourth Degree in Oceanside a success. We had 51 Third Degree Brothers advanced to the Fourth  Degree. Those new Sir Knights I spoke with were impressed with the ceremony. Many were surprised  how influential the Catholic Church was with the early exploration and settlement of North America. If  any of your brothers missed the opportunity to advance last month, there is another exemplification on  March 23 at Russo’s on the Bay in Queens.

Vivat Jesus!

PADRE PIO’S MESSENGER January / February 2024 PADRE PIO ASSEMBLY # 2718

 www.padrepioassembly.org

Faithful Navigator Faithful Comptroller  S/K Joseph Pirinea S/K Max Hochrain

Sir Knights, as the Christmas season winds down I hope you enjoyed time  with family and friends. I always get a warm comforting feeling when I take  the time to reach out to friends and family that I have not had contact with  during the year. As Sir Knights we should strive to reach out to friends and

family not only when they are in distress but, throughout the year. The  Christmas season is a magical time of year. Let us try to keep it going all year  long. Let us pray that 2024 brings an end to war and suffering for the people  of the world. Especially, for the people of Ukraine, Gaza/ Palestine, Isreal and other areas with conflicts around the world. Remember, Jesus Christ was  born in Bethlehem. The birth of Christ in Bethlehem sent a message of peace  to the citizens of Bethlehem and the world. Today Bethlehem “is a place of  sorrow and silence”. Let us remember to pray for world peace on a daily  basis! Our Assembly continues to work to end food insecurity in our parishes,  and towns; as well as poor areas around the world. Through our partnership  with the Truth North Community Church / Serve All , we distribute to those  in need , Excess Serve All donations are given to Padre Pio for distribution to  our six Church food pantries. We presently deliver donated food and clothing  to ten pantries in Nassau County, the Inn in Hempstead and the Nassau/  Suffolk VFW on a regular basis. I would also like to note that in November  2023 the Assembly Honor guard participated in all four councils Memorial  Masses. We will also be participating in the January Pro Life Mass at St.  Patrick’s Cathedral in N.Y.C. God Bless You. Vivat Jesus! F/N Joseph Pirinea

PADRE PIO’S MESSENGER March / April 2024 PADRE PIO ASSEMBLY # 2718

 www.padrepioassembly.org

Faithful Navigator Faithful Comptroller  S/K Joseph Pirinea S/K Max Hochrain

Sir Knights, Winter’s end is in sight, can you believe that spring is right  around the corner, neither can I. The first day of Spring is March 19th, as most  of you know, the Catholic Calendar celebrates St. Joseph’s Day on March 19.  In Italy and other parts of the world, St. Joseph’s Day is also celebrated as  Father’s day. Let us not forget that St. Joseph was Baby Jesus’s earthly father.  On a personal note, my first grandchild (Gianna Marie) was born on St.  Joseph’s Day. A wonderful gift to me and my family. Getting back to  business, Padre Pio Assembly’s nominating committee, headed by PFN, PGK  Mike Latva is soliciting names for next year’s Officers and Committeemen.  Please step up to be an Officer, Patron, or Chair of a Committee position to  help keep our Assembly going and growing. If you’re interested in a position  please contact Mike or PGK, PFN John Silvestro. If we do not get enough  volunteers for our open positions, I will start volunteering you as early as the  April Officer and Assembly Meetings. Who said we are not like the Military?  LOL. The next Fourth Degree Exemplification will be held on March 23  starting 10am at Russo’s on the Bay in Howard Beach. A special thank you to  Commander PFN, Bill Roller for distributing Ashes to Officers on Ash  Wednesday. Bill is also looking for Guardsmen to volunteer to set up an  Assembly Color Guard. Three members of our Honor Guard, including the  Commander participated with Cardinal Mercier Color Guard for the opening  Ceremony of the February 11th NY Islanders game at USB Arena.  God Bless You. Vivat Jesus! F/N Joseph Pirinea
